I took away from it that personal finances are something to pay close attention to and shouldn’t be taken frivolously. In dealing with the public and trying to handle their unpaid bills, I learned quickly what not to do in regards to finance, and how a simple oversight or even a small bill can destroy your credit.

One story of my storied debt collection agent career is about a client that I actually talked to quite frequently. I had a very hard time coming down on him for his unpaid bills with my company, because he was so nice and had a very charismatic personality. I tried to look at him as a client and not I person I liked (which was the bosses’ orders and extremely difficult for me to do) but in the end, I couldn’t let him slip through the cracks any longer. I had to report him to the credit bureaus, which instantly changed his demeanor with me. He was livid I had reported him, even after I tried to explain that I had no choice. This was my first lesson of finances; they can make you unhappy and even hostile if they aren’t handled correctly.

My debt collection agency career also ended up including chatting with clients about how they had screwed up their own finances. One customer in particular had a shopping addiction, and as a result had unpaid bills all over town. She had a goal of the American dream-a nice house, a new car. She wreaked such disaster on her finances and credit that she was left struggling to pay her bills-and unable to be approved for a loan for any of the things she wanted. I made a mental note to not follow in her footsteps.

Then there were the clients who basically did not pay attention one way or the other to their finances or any of their bills. These were the most frequent cases I experienced when I was a debt collection agent; the people who were merely ignorant of whom they owed money to. They didn’t maliciously “forget” their bills-they just forgot. It usually caused a lot of grief (for me, of course, but for them too) when they had to straighten their situation out and talk to lots of debt collectors. It seemed like a lot more aggravation than it was worth-why couldn’t they just pay their bills and pay attention to their finances? Even though I understood that oversights will happen, it didn’t (and it still doesn’t) make sense to me.

In the end? I didn’t have it in me to be a debt collection agent, but I did learn that personal finances are vital to pay attention to. It could mean the difference between buying a house, getting a great interest rate, and in the end, paying less for something. And the knowledge I took away from the stint was worth all of the people (many of them, not-so-nice) that I had to deal with.
