Five Beneficial Search Engines
Sometimes finding the information you need online can be a daunting task. There are various different search engines it’s tough to figure out which one would serve you best. These are 5 useful search engines, but each of them has their own strengths and weaknesses. Remember, these aren’t the 5 most popular search engines, just ones that are useful.
1. Google- The most used search engine also happens to be a very useful one. If you want to find a pertinent website with just a few keywords, Google should be your first choice. Most times you will find a website that suits what you are searching for on the first page, and usually it’ll be one of the first websites listed. Google should typically be your first choice if you have your keywords in mind and know what you’re looking for.
2. Yahoo!- If Google doesn’t get the job done for you then Yahoo should. Yahoo will sometimes have websites listed that Google doesn’t. Like Google, Yahoo works well with just a few keywords and you’ll most likely find a good result on the first page.
3. Answers.com- Answers.com is a great search engine if you have a specific question that you need the answer to. Just type in your question and Answers.com will turn up a page with useful information that looks to answer whatever question you just entered. For example, if you enter “Who is the god of thunder?” you are presented with a page listing the god of thunder for different regions all over the world. Answers.com is a great search engine if you need your information fast and do not want to wade through a list of links.
4. Dogpile.com- Dogpile is a metasearch engine. A metasearch engine combines the results of several different search engines into one. Dogpile combines the results of Google, Yahoo, and Bing. This is useful because you are getting a lot of results for your search, but sometimes this can be overwhelming and you may be better off using a standalone search engine.
5. Yippy- Yippy is a metasearch engine just like Dogpile but it has an added feature that makes it useful. It takes the results from your keyword and organizes them into useful clusters that can help you expand your search in ways you hadn’t thought of. For example, if you search for “guitars” you may get a cluster about “bass guitars” and another cluster for “acoustic guitars”. This is a very useful search engine if you have a topic in mind but are unsure what you really want to know about it.
