Guerilla Marketing Tactics

Everyday people are bombarded with advertising and marketing tactics wherever they go. This amount of advertising and marketing is too much for one person to handle and they often forget the majority of the advertising they are exposed to. With people putting on their “blockers” marketers and advertisers need to find new ways to get consumers attention and make sure their message gets through to them, this is where guerilla marketing comes in. Guerilla marketing relies on creativity and creating a buzz, not an obscenely large marketing and advertising budget. The hope is that your guerilla marketing tactics will spread through word of mouth and garner attention for you brand or product. There are many different tactics for starting a guerilla marketing campaign, but here are a few tips and methods that are sure to get you at least some attention.

One method that is sure to gain attention is a fake publicity stunt. Stage a protest in front of your business except have the signs the protesters are holding all say positive things about your business and products. Passersby will stop and take notice and hopefully keep your business in mind the next time they need something. This is a great tactic for creating an immediate buzz with your business as the centerpiece.

Sending out mailing is tough as people quickly identify junk mail and it often goes into the trash unread. One way to at least get your mailing a second look is to pay for the postage with strictly one-cent stamps. A large envelope covered in stamps is sure to get noticed, after that it is up to the content inside to capture the readers attention and provoke further action.

One guerilla marketing tactic is placing stickers or graffiti related to your business around town. This is illegal as it involves defacing property, but if your graffiti is interesting enough it will get attention and possibly draw customers to your business. This is a tactic that really shouldn’t be used, but it often is. Anyone who has been on the NYC subway knows you will see stickers all over the place for different products and brands. A spinoff of this idea that is effective and legal is reverse graffiti. Reverse graffiti is the act of cleaning dirt off a surface in a certain design so your brand or message can now be seen on the once dirty surface. Since you are cleaning property and not permanently doing anything you can get away with reverse graffiti without a problem.

As with any other kind of marketing or advertising you need to be careful how you implement your guerilla marketing. You need to think beforehand how people will react and if it will cause your company to be viewed in a negative light. For example, the show Aqua Teen Hunger Force on Cartoon Network places lights around the city of Boston that displayed characters from the show. These lights were mistaken for potential bombs and caused a panic around the city. This is not how you want people to react to your guerilla marketing.

Guerilla marketing is a useful tool for marketers and advertisers that want to create a stir about their products or brands without spending a lot of money. There are plenty of other techniques than the few I named. Go out there and be creative.
